"A book, too, can be a star, 'explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly,' a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe." - from Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal Acceptance Speech

The Ideal Bookshelf: What books shape who we are and inspire us?

I. My Ideal Bookshelf Introduction

Many books we read affect our lives, inspire us, and help shape our identities.

What are 10-15 books that you love and have helped shape your identity? Create an Ideal Bookshelf that includes these titles.

I will show you my sample and take you on a tour of my reading life.

Task:
  • brainstorm in your notebook; do research to accurately note title and author
  • create an Ideal Bookshelf using template provided , drawing your own version, or taking a photograph of the actual books
  • finish for homework
  • Write 3-5 paragraphs elaborating on why you included 1 or 2 of the books on your bookshelf. This is your first writing assignment which will be used as a benchmark to assess your reading and writing skills. Be sure to apply what you have learned in ELA in previous years.

II. Share and Reflect: Readers share their passion for books with other readers and reflect on why books are meaningful to their lives.

Task:
  • Museum share: list in your notebook:
    • Who do you have books and/or authors in common with?
    • Based on others' lists, what books do you want to read?
  • Find 1-2 people you have a book in common with. Discuss why you chose the book and what it shows about you.
