Process for Writing a Reading Response: Developing a Claim/thesis statement

1. Reread and revise synthesis page. Add:

                                               i.     Relevant textual evidence from different parts of the text

                                             ii.     Your thoughts, opinions, reasons, conclusions, questions, connections

                                            iii.     Illustrations or visual tools to help you organize your ideas

2. Develop and draft a claim/thesis statement: 1-2 sentence analytical claim about the text

Task:

• read sample claims; which would be strong focuses for a reading response? Why? How could they be revised?
• Vince meets Melvin and gets gaydar, the ability to see who is gay.
• I feel that Vince should not have asked Melvin to turn Butch blue.
• "Am I Blue?" makes me think of how difficult and confusing it is to be gay.
• Vince changes from being insecure and ashamed of his sexuality to being more confident  and accepting. 
• reflect on and list qualities of a strong claim
