1. Choose either Another Sonnet for Stephan by Alan Lawrence Sitomer or America by Claude McKay which are in your packets.
2. Read and annotate lines you like, the main ideas of each section, and literary devices.
3. Answer these questions in your notebook (short responses should be complete paragraphs):
1. What is a central idea/theme in the poem? How do you know? Give 2 details.
2. What are two literary devices used in the poem? How do they contribute to the main and central ideas of the poem?

II. 2nd period-3rd periods (812 and 810)

1. 1 period of independent reading; students must write date, title, author, start-end pages, and 2 notes.
2. Read and annotate “Return of the Measles” in newest Upfront. Write the main idea of each paragraph in the margins and underline important words and terms.
