These are the steps I want you to take in completing the multiple choice questions:
1. Scan/skim the passage - read the directions; identify the genre:
- nonfiction: non-narrative, informational (article or essay; could be on science or social studies topics)
- nonfiction: narrative (memoir, biography, autobiography)
- literary: fiction, poetry, drama
3. Read the questions before you read the passage; don't read the answer choices
4. Read the passage and take notes; keep the questions in mind
5. Answer the questions without looking at the choices (cover the choices with your hand). Think and don't get tricked!
6. Make the right answer choices:
- Read all the choices and narrow down by using the process of elimination.
- Be careful of distractors; there is usually 1 choice that seems like it could be right but is not completely correct.
- Go back to the passage.
- Reread question. Choose the answer that is 100% accurate.
