Vocabulary: Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots

Prefix: word part (morpheme) that goes before the main part of a word; it changes the meaning of the word; it cannot stand alone

ex. bi-= 2; tri=3; uni=1 + cycle
bicycle, tricycle, unicycle

Suffix: word part that goes at the end of a word; it can change the meaning and part of speech

ex. bicycling, bicyclist

* Note: a word like "bill" does not have a prefix even though it begins with the letters bi. If you take a prefix or suffix out, the word should be able to stand alone.

Root: main part of a word that can be of Greek or Latin origin; not every word has a root

ex. diagnostic, agnostic
gnos- is the root that means to know

Homework – Vocabulary Review:

Using words from Unit 1, make 1 list of words with prefixes and 1 with suffixes. First, identify the words that have these word parts. Then, add prefixes and suffixes to the vocabulary words to create new words. Finally, write the part of speech in each word.
