Monday-Wednesday ELA Classwork

Dear 810, 807, and 813:

I am still going to be scoring citywide tests and won't be back until Thursday:-( Here is the work you are all responsible for.

Each number indicates work to do in one period; since schedules vary, some classes will be required to complete more than others in these three days.


General homework and reminders:

• Unit 9 vocab quiz next Monday May 14 
• Interview brainstorm worksheet due Thursday May 10
• Trip on Friday, May 11. Readers, please practice!!
• Read your coming of age novels. By Friday May 18, be at least halfway through and write 1st blog post.
• Return all Romeo and Juliet books on Thursday May 10
• Please keep the room clean and organized.

Note: if there is any time left over in any class, students can either do independent reading, study vocabulary, work on their interview brainstorm worksheet, or do free writing based on coming of age reflection questions
 

1. Vocabulary Unit 9

• Teacher, if possible, please check each student's homework which was to complete all of Unit 9 in workbook; mark on rosters on clipboards, give either a check, incomplete, or 0
• Students: using all 20 words in Unit 9, create an activity to be completed by another student. You can do a crossword puzzle, unscramble with clues, fill in the blank sentences or story or poem. Do this on loose leaf. When you are finished, switch with a partner, complete each other's activity, then check it. Hand this in when complete.

2. With their Eyes (books are in bins on the window sill; they need to be returned in the same place. Please take excellent care of them!)

• Choose reflection question from list and write about it in your notebook for about 7 min.
• Read independently or aloud in small groups: "Heartless"starting on p. 115 in hardcover book (not sure in paperback because I don't have a copy on me), "You Need Hope" p. 119, and "Things Below, Things Above" p. 133
• In your notebook, make two columns. One the left side, write down at least 1 quotation from each chapter that you found most meaningful or interesting. Next to each quotation, write what the excerpt made you think, feel, and know.

3.  With their Eyes

• Choose reflection question from list and write about it in your notebook for about 7 min. 
• Read "Wake up Call" starting on p. 159 hc, and "Powerless" p. 165
• In your notebook, make two columns. One the left side, write down at least 1 quotation from each chapter that you found most meaningful or interesting. Next to each quotation, write what the excerpt made you think, feel, and know.

4. With their Eyes

• Choose reflection question from list and write about it in your notebook for about 7 min.  
• Read "Amazingly Resilient" starting on p. 199 hc, "Fearing for your Safety" p. 209, and "Missing Wings" p. 217.
•  In your notebook, make two columns. One the left side, write down at least 1 quotation from each chapter that you found most meaningful or interesting. Next to each quotation, write what the excerpt made you think, feel, and know.

5. With their Eyes and Reflection on Monologue Writing Project

In small groups or independently, discuss these questions and write down your answers on loose leaf to be handed in at the end of the period (this should take most of the period; when done, do independent work - see Note above):

• Which monologue did you have the strongest reaction to, and why?

• What issues/ideas did this play raise for you?

• What did you notice about the way these monologues were constructed that you can use in your own monologue?  (Look at beginnings, endings, movements from one subject to the next)

• How do you think this text relates to the topic of coming of age? 

• What are some topics and questions you might ask in your interview?

6. Independent Reading Period

• Read coming of age novel
• In your notebook, write down date, title of book, pages you started and ended on.
• In the last 10 minutes of class, answer this question in notebook: Who is the main character? What are some important personal experiences he/she is going through so far? What do they reveal about the character? Provide at least 2 quotations from the text to show your answer.
