This 10-month journey with you has been filled with book clubs, acting out Romeo and Juliet, trips to museums, thoughtful debates and discussions. Collectively, you've read and written thousands of pages of poetry, essays, and stories. Congratulations on reaching the end of your 8th grade journeys with me as your guide. Along the way, I've gotten to know your individual talents and strengths. And you've each enriched my life and each other's lives in many ways.
I wish you a long life of learning, reading, and writing. Be brave. Choose words and actions that will have a positive impact on your lives, communities, and the world overall. Stay woke!

Maya - whose name means gracious nature truly is a person of grace, always willing to help, remembered for her picture book reading
Dakota - a daring thespian who killed his role as Romeo; known to make people smile with his PUNtastic humor
Ellyn - always 100%; her 100 average is seen in her daily hard work; her role as Paris was also spectacular
Boe - aside from loving her wardrobe, I will remember her beautifully illustrated butterfly picture book
Olive - the life of the party, always bringing laughter and fun; she put on a stunning performance as Romeo and helped choreograph a great dance for Act 1 Sc 5
Emma - winner of the biggest Queen fan award, she will be known for her sonnet to her cat Shadow and her role as Prince in R and J
Kaya - another 100 % intelligent, kind child whose calming presence was like a welcome breeze on a humid summer day
Jacqueline - if I could have a teacher's pet, she would be it; she was the best section sheet monitor I've ever had; I would trust her with my phone and finances
Jack - his mayor announcements could be heard on the turf; he is a talented actor whose voice will one day be on loud speakers across the city telling us to bring in baked goods for bake sales and pennies for Pennies for Patients
Sadman - never saw him sad though he did play a threateningly angry Capulet
Anya - a true poet who was one of the Poetry in Performance winners; will also be remembered for her role as Juliet
Brendan - the highlight of his 8th grade ELA career was his role as the vengeful Romeo
Helen - a true scholar whose role as Prince was moving and who read graduate-level texts such as The Picture of Dorian Gray
Rafaella - known for her emotional role as Lady Capulet and her gift at doing all the hip dances of the day
Talia - a bewitching Macbeth witch who had a magical smile in class and read more than any other 8th grader
Leo - a gentle lion who wrote a persuasive argument essay about youth imprisonment
Kayla - an all around clutch kid who worked really well in all her groups
Ila - known for her leading role as Juliet and for winning the Poetry in Performance contest
Scarlet - an amazing reader and activist, wrote an important picture book that dealt with gender identity
Eamon - an outstanding actor who played Montague; he also wrote a creative picture book about the importance of social protests
Dexter - known for his Oscar-winning role as Mercutio and for his poem that also won the Poetry in Performance contest
Katie - an energetic future aerobics instructor, she could lead groups in fun exercises
Yassin - the father of many paper people sculptures, he will be remembered for his gentle and kind demeanor
Jordan - the Air Jordan, towering over all in height and character
Frankie - another true poet and Ravenclaw whose poem was a winner in the Poetry in Performance contest
Theo - a fiery Tybalt, his acting powers really showed through
Suhaylah - a star writer of all genres and a superior scholar whose read scores of books this year
Luli - a passionate Juliet who expertly played dead
Nandi - an energetic spirit whose comedic acts made everyone laugh; she also wrote meaningfully about social issues
Sakhaya - a smiling co-mayor who was silly yet a serious A student
Stella - a stellar student who performed beautifully as Juliet
Arizona - a multi-talented Brooklynite who contributed mightily to her book clubs
