This 10-month journey with you has been filled with book clubs, acting out Romeo and Juliet, trips to museums, thoughtful debates and discussions. Collectively, you've read and written thousands of pages of poetry, essays, and stories. Congratulations on reaching the end of your 8th grade journeys with me as your guide. Along the way, I've gotten to know your individual talents and strengths. And you've each enriched my life and each other's lives in many ways.
This is what I will remember of you:
I wish you a long life of learning, reading, and writing. Be brave. Choose words and actions that will have a positive impact on your lives, communities, and the world overall. Stay woke!

Owen - a true scholar who has read several thousands of pages this year and written an important picture book on leading LGBTQ+ figures
Austin - a quiet ninja whose raised his average every semester, ending the year in the high 90's
Sarah - an actor known for her role as Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet will also be known in the future as a professional soccer player who will help the US win in a Women's World Cup
Imre - a dark knight ready to take on bullies which was the subject of his picture book
Nora - knower of naiads and nymphs and illustrated them beautifully in her picture book
Jude - a rock n roller at heart who made me think of The Beatles every time I said his name: "Hey Jude, don't make it bad; Take a sad song, and make it better..."
Riley - the only student I've had who only had Manga on his/her reading log (aside from required reading)
Caleb - a trustworthy distributor who moved quickly like a cheetah and will be remembered for his Oscar-worthy role as Romeo
Evelyn - a sophisticated reader who reads books I didn't read until college, like The Bluest Eye
Freya - a true creative spirit whose poem won the Poetry in Performance contest
Madron - never mad, just a MAD cool dude who is always sincere in his responses and discussions
Viona - shy yet ebullient who is talented at drawing pandas
Ruby - the next Frida Kahlo, amazing artist who illustrated a lovely picture book with elephants as the main characters
Charlotte - a stealthy feline, an avid fan of The Warriors series by Erin Hunter, and an animal-rights supporter whose picture book centered on animals in captivity for the sake of science
Jessica - one of the best supporting actresses in the 807 production of Romeo and Juliet for her role as Lady Capulet
Hayden - master of working for long stretches of time as long as he had his Air Pods in
Samantha - a glad giggler who balanced silliness with seriousness
Reilly - a jiu jitsu fighter not to be reckoned with will save our planet from destruction
Thalia - a dancer and fantastic feminist, can gracefully choreograph words as well as movement
Sophia - her name is Greek for lover of wisdom, and she is wise in the ways of the world and will one day be a supportive senator
Una - a Celtic name meaning white wave, she is as forceful and persistent as a wave; her polar bear picture book is a testament to her name
Jonah - a smiling silly student who mastered the art of squirrel drawing
Amalia - though speaking with low volume, her contributions to the class were voluminous; for instance, she killed her role as Juliet
Sam - Shakespeare incarnate, son of sonnets; he moved stages and the audience of 807 whenever he performed, particularly his performance of the raging Capulet
Katherine - a gifted picture book writer whose carefully constructed children’s book delighted young children
Archana - Winner of the handwriting award and future UN ambassador known for argument essay on international policy
Luke - with a unique fashion sense he may be the next Alexander McQueen or humanities professor
Franklyn - always acting with integrity, he also gets an A for his active participation
Miranda - queen of Upfront annotations, making insightful observations of current events and remembered for her lead role as Juliet
Isabel - aka Issey; a courageous writer who tackled the issue of depression in a picture book; she will be remembered for bringing life to the Fantastic Five (the corner table consisting of Sarah, Riley, Jessica, Samantha, and Issey)
Inessa - aka Ina; a talented dancer who will also be remembered for her lead role as Juliet
Shirley - a supreme speller and grammarian, she will be remembered for her argument essay on Romeo and Juliet and her acting role as Montague
