I. My Ideal Bookshelf

Many books we read affect our lives, inspire us, and help shape our identities.

What are 8-12 books that you love and have helped shape your identity? Create an Ideal Bookshelf that includes these titles. Choose books from different points in your life and from different genres, books that you would carry with you for the rest of your life. Think of this as your textual lineage, a history of books that have affected who you are today.

Questions to consider:

• What books taught me valuable lessons and helped me better understand the world?
• What books have important sentiments and memories associated with them?
• What books do I want to take with me throughout my life?
• What books have influenced and impacted my actions and character?

Task:

• reflect on the questions and brainstorm in your notebook; do research to accurately note title and author
• create an Ideal Bookshelf using template provided , drawing your own version, or taking a photograph of the actual books
• finish for homework
• Write a 3-5 paragraph essay elaborating on why you included 1 or 2 of the books on your bookshelf. Think about: how has this text changed and inspired me? This is your first writing assignment which will be used as a benchmark to assess your reading and writing skills. Be sure to apply what you have learned in ELA in previous years. Be sure to plan and draft this assignment.

II. Share and Reflect: Readers share their passion for books with other readers and reflect on why books are meaningful to their lives.

Task:

• Museum share; silently walk around and read your peers' assignments; write down reflections here:

• What do you notice and what surprises you?

• Based on others' lists, what books do you want to read?

• Find at least 1person you have a book in common with. Discuss why you chose the book and what it shows about you. Write the students’ names and what you have in common.
