"A book, too, can be a star, 'explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly,' a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe." - from Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal Acceptance Speech

Reading log and marathon

Student:_________________________________  Class: ___________
Book-a-thon to Raise Money for Pennies for Patients
Start Date: Tuesday March 4, 2014   End Date: Monday March 31
To help raise money for patients with leukemia and lymphoma, we are urging you to support our students in an exciting reading marathon! This has a myriad of benefits:
  • Reading will help prepare students for the ELA Statewide Test on April 1-3
  • Reading will make them smarter and help prepare them for high school, especially if they read challenging books
  • Reading is a requirement of ELA and is part of the weekly homework of reading at least 2 ½ hours every week)
  • Raising money for reading will ultimately help people in need (see school website for details)!
How it works:
  • For every 50 pages read, pledge at least $1. Students should be reading at least 300 pages a month; this depends on the reader and the book.
  • Students must keep a log to show what and how many pages they are reading (required homework). They can read books of any genre that is at their level.
  • Find donors - ask family, friends, neighbors, etc. List their pledge amounts here, then before the donations are due, please collect the money from them (cash or check payable to MS 51 with student’s name and class and Pennies for Patients written in the Memo). Donations due in school on Monday March 31.
