"A book, too, can be a star, 'explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly,' a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe." - from Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal Acceptance Speech

Reading Process

Reading Process
A book is like an onion – has many layers.
Reading is peeling away the layers, cutting it up, cooking it in different recipes, and eating and digesting it.
Reading is a process, just like cooking is.
Here are the steps:
1)      Observe – What do you see and notice on the surface? Ex. Wilbur is a talking pig.
2)      Infer – what conclusions can you make based on the observations/evidence? Ex. “Wilbur felt lonely and sad when Fern was not with him: “He threw himself in the manure and sobbed.
3)      Interpret – What is the overall significance? Why is this detail important to the overall text? Ex. Wilbur is an important character because he shows us the importance of being loved and accepted.
Extend – What does this mean to me and the world? How does it connect to other texts, etc.? What does it inspire me to think, feel, know, and/or do?
