In this unit, we will be reading and writing a variety of texts to help broaden our understanding of the issues that affect our society.
What is society? According to the online Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it is a community, nation, or broad grouping of people having common traditions, institutions, and collective activities and interests. A few aspects of society we will be focusing on are:
- Social Issues – topics and/or problems that affect many people in society; for example, poverty, bullying, use of cellular phones in schools, same-sex marriage, etc.
- Social Awareness – being informed about important social issues; all books and other media (newspapers, magazines, television, etc.) can help develop our awareness
- Social Action – actively taking part in solving a social problem; there are many varieties from recycling and conserving resources to fundraising and writing books, poetry, letters, articles, etc.
- Social Change – from awareness and action comes change; what changes in our society have come about from awareness and action?
- Social Justice – creating overall fairness for all people by solving problems
Today we will be watching a video for a song called “World on Fire” by Sarah McLaughlin. Before we do so, read the lyrics at least twice and annotate it. Questions to consider: What is the message of this song? What does the singer want the audience to think, feel, know? How is the world on fire? How does this video fit into our unit?
