Our first unit is on rereading a childhood classic through a more sophisticated lens. We have been learning to unpack multiple layers of meaning in seemingly simple texts. Together, we read and annotated Charlotte's Web by E. B. White. The lessons we have learned are: how to annotate, how to appreciate smaller details in a text, make meaningful connections, identify themes and big ideas, and write RAD reading responses.
Next, students will apply what they have learned with CW and work in book clubs to reread another childhood classic. The books they are choosing from are: The Giver by Lois Lowry, Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, Stuart Little by E. B. White, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engel. They will also learn other ways to deepen their reading experience such as using research, analyzing writing craft and author's purpose, and tracking character journeys.
The final project will be a written appreciation, an essay expressing what they loved about the books they chose to reread.
