Reflection on Student Ideal Bookshelf Essays + Guidelines on Commenting and Inserting Photographs

I was impressed by the engaging essays that many of you wrote. There was a sense of sincere passion and authentic meaning. Each essay was distinct and revealed a lot about your literary lineages, your reading histories. If anything, these essays prove how integral reading is to all of our lives, whether you are a voracious or reluctant reader.

Assignment: For your class, read and comment the above student essays, and write a 2-3 sentence comment. 

How to comment on a blog post:
1. Go to the bottom of the entry and click on the No Comments link.
2. Write a short paragraph explaining what you liked and learned from reading the post. 

a) What is at least 1 thing you notice and/or like about the writing? Explain why you think it is important and/or why you like it. 
b) What is a connection, question, or suggestion you have? Explain.

* Be sure to use academic language.

II. Review your essay and rubric. Complete the student reflection at the bottom of the rubric.

Go over as a class: what do you want to work on in writing?

III. Review and Make Corrections: The most common errors related to formatting titles. Also, many of you need to work on proofreading and spelling words and names correctly. Many of you misspelled authors' names and words in the title of the text. Review these rules.

Rules for Formatting Titles

·         Use quotation marks for a short story/essay/poem from an anthology/collection; episodes of television series; song titles; articles from journals; and a posting/article from a Web site.

·         Use italics for book/anthology titles; periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers); and Web sites. 

Examples: 

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft (book)

 “House Mothers and Haunted Daughters: Shirley Jackson and Female Gothic” (journal article)

Capitalizing Titles

   Capitalize the first letter of the major words of titles. Minor words, such as articles, prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions, are not capitalized unless they are the first word of a title or subtitle.

 “Why Boys Don’t Play with Dolls” (a short essay) 

 In the Heat of the Night (a film)

Assignment: 
1. Make corrections to titles on your essay. 
2. Post the essay and image of your bookshelf on your blog.

IV. How to post a photo:
- take a photo and email it to yourself or upload it onto your computer
- make sure your photo is clear and facing the right way before you email or upload it; you cannot change it once it is on blogger
- open your email, click on the image, then copy and paste it onto a blog post
- if the photo is saved to your hard drive, open up the blog post, click the photo icon, and upload the image from your computer
- for the size of the photo, choose small
- publish your post
