Independent reading homework during December break
Let’s reinvigorate our independent reading lives. Many of you have been getting lazy about reading :-( or perhaps you have been overwhelmed with multiple responsibilities and chores (that's my excuse). With the citywide test in April (it’s three days long), we don’t have that much time to increase our stamina and just strengthen our reading muscles. Over the break, sit down and read at least 5 different times. Each time, read at least 30 minutes though try to read for a longer period of time. Finally, log what you read on loose leaf or on chart given in class; include the following information:
- Date
- Title and author
- Start and end time
- Pages read (page you began on and ended on: ex. 5-78)
- Interesting observations and inferences that might lead to a good reading response
Then add up total number of pages read over break: _________________
• For parents: please sign if you witnessed your child reading and that this information is accurate. This homework will not be accepted if not signed.

• Now, make a reading plan for the next month. What are some specific books, genres, and/or writers that you want to read? What are your other goals for improving your independent reading life? Be specific (some examples: read for an hour at a time, read the Hunger Games series, be prepared and focused during independent reading in class and Project REAL, etc.).
