Drafting the Multigenre Paper

I. The Opening

• should ground the reader in the topic, introduce them to the main character (you or persona) and the theme. It should be "engaging, informative, and reader-friendly. Robert Cormier says that he likes to grab readers by the lapels in the beginning of his young adult novels" (Romono 40).
• Here are some options:

1. Poem that introduces conflict and/or character
2. Sketch of main character
3. Narrative of central character in the beginning
4. Vivid description of relevant symbol, object, or place
5. Photo or picture
6. Dialogue

II. General Tips for Drafting

• Consider the structure. How are you organizing the paper? Ex. The Allosaurs in Phoenix is organized in chronological order. The Five Ages of Relationships is organized by acts and is also in chronological order.
• Consider the ending. How can you make the paper come full circle? What can unite the beginning and ending of your paper?
  
• What is holding your paper together? How can you improve the unity and coherence? Think about how to make the transitions between each part smooth and clear. Ex. In The Allosaurs in Phoenix, each part leads into the next part by introducing new characters.
  
• Try different genres to write about one moment or topic. See which one is best. For instance, if you are describing a character, you can try a character sketch, monologue, stream of consciousness, poem, or diary entry. Try out a couple then choose the best one.
• Make sure you include meaningful details.
  

1. Determine when to use implicit (subtle) versus explicit (obvious) details.
2. Include a variety of details.
3. Zoom in on important details and zoom out on not so important ones.
4. Try writing from different points of views.
